The law on motor insurance has changed

From June 2011 all vehicles registered in the UK must be insured at all times or be declared off the road with a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN). It will no longer be acceptable to allow insurance to lapse on vehicles which are temporarily laid up but where the SORN declaration has not been completed.

Responsibility for maintaining valid insurance rests with the registered keeper. The government’s goal is to reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the road.

The new rules will have an impact on owners of collector’s cars or agricultural vehicles which are used on a seasonal basis, where motor insurance is only arranged for the period when the vehicle is in commission. If insurance is cancelled during the laid up period, a SORN declaration will be required.
